John Clark

I found John Clark in the 1870 Washington Twp, Marion County census, page 311, enumerated on 20 August 1870.

John Clark, age 46, born Washington D.C., parents foreign-born, $22,000 value of real estate, $1500 (or $7500 ? ) personal worth, works in flouring mill. Alice Clark, age 26, born Ohio, keeping house, is presumably his wife or daughter.

The next couple listed are Joseph, 59, and Salina, 45, Williams, both born Ohio. Joseph keeps the hotel.

I didn't find a marriage record for them in Marion County Marriages, 1845-1915.

In 1860 I found two John Clarks in the Washington D.C. census, and there may be more. It's impossible to determine if one of them is your John Clark without more information.
