Verification of grandfathers birth in Knoxville

I am just starting my path of genealogy and I am looking for verification and parents of my grandfather via birth certificate or via 1885 census. Draft records from WWI indicate that birth place was Knoxville, IA which is contrary to all verbal accounts. His name was Roy Milton Kirkpatrick and the birth date was April 9, 1894. His back ground is very fogged and he passed away in 1948 and the current survivors do not know much. Thank you for your help.
