Irene Mattix was born on Dec. 7, 1921, in New Sharon to Martin Christiansen and Elnora (Hanson) Christiansen.

Irene was raised in the New Sharon area until her family moved to California. At the age of 16 she graduated from high school in Sacramento. Her family then moved back to Iowa and Irene worked in the kitchen at the hospital in Oskaloosa.

In January of 1942, she married Kenneth Dean Mattix. Kenneth drove a truck for many years and Irene took care of the home. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking and baking for her family. She was also a great animal lover; she especially had a soft spot for cats.

Irene died on Sept. 9 at the Pleasant Care Living Center at the age of 83.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Survivors include her daughter, Connie Daggett and husband Harlan of Pleasantville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Grace Christiansen of Pleasantville and many other family members and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 12 at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville with Don Hill officiating.

Interment was at Pleasantville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Pleasantville Church of Christ.
