Knoxville Journal September 6, 1917
Mrs. Rebecca McCollum died at Lake Hamilton, Fla., Wednesday, August 22, aged 82 years, 4 months and 26 days. She was a daughter of John and Jane Taggart, and was born March 26,1835, near Moorefield, Harrison county, Ohio.
In the year 1857 she removed with her parents to Iowa.
On October 27, 1864, she was united in marriage with James McCollum who died February 14, 1888. To this union were born five children, two of whom preceded her in death, Sarah J., who died at Knoxville February 1, 1900, and Robert E., who died at Montrose, Colo., December 13, 1916.
Those of the family left mourn her death are James B., of lake Hamilton,Fla., Zella M., of Montrose, Colo., and Mattie F., (wife of Dr. B.F. Stewart), of Moorefield, Neb.,and two step-daughters, Mrs. J.S. Irvin, of Ireton, and Mrs. William Edmond, of Britton, Okla., who shared in the care and love of the family.
In early life Mrs. McCollum became a member of the United Presbyterian church at Knoxville and was one of its most faithful members and efficent workers, being a woman of the old type of faith who not only walked consistently in the way of righteousness, herself, but trained her household in the same reverential faith.
It may truly be said of her, "She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eatheth not the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her Blessed."
She was not only an energetic woman, but one of brilliant mind and fluency of speech, and during the long illness of her last year when the mind seemed to have vanished her conversation was mostly Scripture quotations and reflected the pure thoughts of the days of her strength.
After the disorganization of the Presbyterian church at Knoxville she transferred her membership to the First Presbyterian church at this place, and although having her residence in Flordia this last three years she retained her membership in this church until death.
Services were held at the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon at 2:30. They were conducted by Rev. J.F. Robertson, inasmuch as Rev. Jacobson is in Minnesota. Interment was made at the Graceland cemetery.
