PELLA - Regina Steenhoek, 82, of Ames and formerly of Pella, died Thursday, June 21, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Covenant Reformed Church in Pella, the Rev. Donald J. Steenhoek officiating. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton. Memorials: Pella Christian Grade School or Pella Christian High School. Visiting hours begin 6 p.m. Saturday at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, where the family will greet friends 2-4 p.m. Sunday.
Regina Van Zee was born Nov. 18, 1918, near Leighton, to Henry J. and Anna Huigen Van Zee. She attended Centennial Country Grade School. She worked outside on her parents' farm doing chores and helping with crops.
As a teenager she lived with an elderly woman and cared for her, cooked and kept her house.
On March 7, 1939, she married Richard Steenhoek. They rented a farm east of Pella for two years. In 1941 they purchased 320 acres of land just south of Pella. They worked on their farm and raised their children. She was active in church and school groups. At age 60, Regina suffered a stroke, and then a series of lighter strokes over the next 20 years, each leaving her a little more dependent. In 1995 they moved in with their son, Paul, in Ames. She was a member of Covenant Reformed Church in Pella.
She is survived by her four children and spouses: Delores and Gary Warmink of Georgetown, Texas, Donald and Joni De Kruyter Steenhoek of Wyoming, Mich., Kathleen and Ronald Bandstra of Pella, and Paul and Julie Johnson Steenhoek of Ames; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, and a sister: John R. and Wilma Van Zee, Edna Van Zee and Clarence P. and Trudy Van Zee, all of Pella; of her husband's family, two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law: Agnes (John) Plate of Pella, and Clara and Brandt Van Maanen of Oskaloosa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Cornie Van Zee; and her sister, Jennie Roozeboom.
