PELLA - Frances De Bruin, 81, of Pella, died Thursday, May 3, at Pella Regional Health Center.
Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Third Reformed Church in Pella, the Rev. Kevin Korver and the Rev. Don Orange officiating. Burial: Black Oak Township Cemetery near Pella. Memorials: Mission Fund, Third Reformed Church, Pella. Visiting hours at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home begin Saturday afternoon and continue until Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Frances De Bruin was born Jan. 6, 1920, on the Black Oak Center Farm east of Pella in Mahaska County, to Jacob C. and Johanna Bieshaar De Bruin. Frances and siblings Grace, Clara, Albert, Arnold and Harold, joined half-brothers Cornie and Henry and half-sister Edna, born to J.C. and Hendrieka Tysseling De Bruin. Frances began her education at Black Oak Center Country Grade School. She graduated from Pella Public High School and was a non-graduate member of the class of 1943 at Central College.
She began working as a clerk at Rexall Drug in Pella. Later she became a teller at the Marion County State Bank in Pella, and for many years was a teller at Oskaloosa Home Loan in Oskaloosa.
She lived with her parents in Pella, and remained there following her father's death in 1959 and her mother's death in 1966. In January 1982, James R. Danks invited Frances into his home to care for the family, Jim, Ryan James and Elizabeth Blair, following Mrs. Danks' death. In November 1993, Frances moved to Pella Manor in Pella. She enjoyed playing cards. She was a lifelong member of Third Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday school and was an originator of their children's worship. She appreciated nature, enjoyed quilting and traveling, and had traveled extensively in Europe.
She is survived by twin brothers and a sister-in-law: Arnold H. De Bruin of Pella, and Harold A. and Ethel De Bruin of Oskaloosa; another sister-in-law, Jennie (Albert) De Bruin of Pella; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.C. and Johanna De Bruin; two half-brothers: the Rev. Cornie A. De Bruin and Henry W. De Bruin; her half-sister, Edna (Gerrit) Van Roekel; two sisters: Grace (Gerrit) Vis and Clara (William) Blom; and a brother, Albert J. De Bruin.
