DES MOINES - Viola J. Underwood, 80, of Des Moines and formerly a long-time Pella resident, died Friday, Dec. 7, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Michael Crouch officiating. Burial: Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visiting hours are open today at the funeral chapel, with family present 7-8 p.m. today.

Viola J. Underwood was born May 9, 1921, in Pershing to Otis and Lucille Greenhalgh Long Turner. She graduated from Attica High School and played basketball there. She worked at Rolscreen for more than 20 years, and retired at age 65 in 1986. She enjoyed playing bingo and loved to travel. She had lived in Pella for 28 years before moving to Des Moines in January 2001.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Jackie and Robert Patterson of Des Moines, and Vicki and Charles Franks of Des Moines; a son, Carol Underwood of Des Moines; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a sister, Barbara Schakel of Pella.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Terry Underwood; a sister, (Cora) Helen Hunt; and a brother, Chelsea Hunt.
