Gary Vern Lanser, 62, of Littleton, Colo., died Wednesday, Oct. 24, in a work-related accident in Yuma, Ariz.

His memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, the Rev. Kevin Korver officiating. Memorials may be made for The Nature Conservancy, the Alzheimer's Association, or the donor's charity of choice.

Gary was born Dec. 12, 1938, in Oskaloosa to William and Wilma De Jong Lanser. He attended Sully Christian Grade School and graduated from Pella Christian High School. He enrolled at Iowa State University in Ames, and then was drafted into the United States Navy. He served four years on submarines and on a submarine rescue ship.

On March 7, 1961, he married Maxine Uitermarkt in Pella. He graduated from ISU with a degree in civil engineering. They lived in many places, including New Orleans, La., and Aurora, Ill., where their daughter, Julie Lynn, was born in 1971. For the past 24 years they lived in Littleton, Colo. Gary was a civil engineer with the Santec Corp. and was doing waste water management work in Yuma.

He was a member of Sully Christian Reformed Church and an affiliate member of Greenwood Community Church in Littleton, Colo. He was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers. He enjoyed a variety of music and reading, working on cars, gadgets and computers, and many outdoor activities. He also had a pilot's license and owned two Harley-Davidson motorcycles which he rode in the mountains.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine; their daughter, Julie Lynn Lanser, working on her master's degree at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces; his father; his sister and brother-in-law: Lola and Ronald Spoelstra of Pella; and his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Ricki Fleener Lanser of Pella.

He was preceded in death by his mother on March 7, 2001.
