PELLA - The Rev. Henry William Kolenbrander, 94, of Pella, died Sunday, Dec. 23, at Pella Regional Health Center.
His funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Third Reformed Church in Pella, the Rev. Kevin Korver officiating, the Rev. Donald Orange assisting. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Pella. Memorials: Hospice of Pella or the Building Fund of Third Reformed Church, Pella. Visiting hours are open at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, with family present 6:30-8 p.m. today.
Henry William Kolenbrander was born Dec. 17, 1907, on a farm near Pella to Gerrit B. and Cornelia Hollenbrands Kolenbrander. He attended Flint Ridge No. 9 Country Grade School near Pella, then Central Academy in Pella. He graduated from Central College in Pella and Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Mich. He was ordained into the ministry of the Reformed Church in America in 1936.
On June 17, 1936, he married Freda Pearl Terpstra in Galesburg. They served churches in South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada. He then was Stated Clerk for the Synod of the West for 15 years. Upon retiring they returned to Pella in 1974. He served as a calling pastor for Third Reformed Church in Pella. He also provided pulpit supply to many churches in the Pella area. He enjoyed reading and ping pong, and was an avid gardener. He used his command of the Dutch language in preaching and translating.
He is survived by his wife, Freda; four children and spouses: Joan E. and Wayne Koele of Cedar Rapids, the Rev. Norman and Joyce Elzinga Kolenbrander of Morrison, Ill., Judith K. and Larry Braskamp of Chicago, Ill., and Marcia J. and Ken Venables of Ottumwa; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters and brothers-in-law: Angeline and William Van Rheenen, Berdena and Valentine Van Rheenen and Janet and Albert De Kock, all of Pella.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two half-sisters: Johanna Ver Meer and Rachel Van Dusseldorp; and four brothers and a sister: Dick J. Kolenbrander, Laurina Kool, Elias Kolenbrander, the Rev. William B. Kolenbrander and James J. Kolenbrander.
