Robert Paul "Rocket" DeWit, 57, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, Sept. 20, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
His funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Robert Morris officiating. Burial: Beacon Cemetery. Visiting hours begin 10 a.m. Sunday, with family present 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel. Memorials: Central United Methodist Church or the VFW Building Fund.
He was born May 26, 1944 in Oskaloosa to George Henry DeWit Sr. and Effie Kamerick. He was raised in Pella and graduated from Pella Christian High School in 1962. After graduation he served in the United States Army.
On April 2, 1966, he married Malinda Beadle; the Rev. Max Johnson officiated the ceremony at the home of Malinda's parents.
They moved to Oskaloosa. He worked for Dykstra's Transfer Co. in Pella, Clow Valve, Oskaloosa Engineering, and for the past seven years at Vermeer Manufacturing in Plants 5 and 3. He was a member of Oskaloosa VFW, American Legion and Eagles. From 1969 to 1973, he played base guitar for '50s and '60s rock and roll bands.
He is survived by his wife, Malinda of Oskaloosa; a son and daughter-in-law: Daniel Edward and Carla DeWit of Oskaloosa; a daughter and son-in-law: Sonja Lynn and Rob Anderson of Beacon; two grandchildren: Robbie and Melanie Anderson; his mother-in-law, Bonnie Beadle of Oskaloosa; two brothers and a sister-in-law: Donald and Barb DeWit of Tracy and George DeWit of Leighton; two brothers-in-law: Tony Beadle of Oskaloosa and Mike (and Carol) Beadle of Oskaloosa; and a sister-in-law: Kathy (and Jerry) Fowler of Oskaloosa.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
