PELLA - Tena Uitermarkt, 93, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Pella, died Friday, Dec. 6, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa.

Her funeral service was held today, Dec. 9, at Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella, the Rev. Isaac W. Meuzelaar officiating, the Rev. Kenneth L. Schepel assisting. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Pella. Memorials: Christian Opportunity Center or Back to God Hour Christian radio ministry. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella handled the arrangements.

Tena (Teunisje) Septer Uitermarkt was born Sept. 26, 1909, in Veenendal, the Netherlands, to William and Jannetje Beyer Septer. The family came to the United States in May 1920, and settled in the Lynnville-Sully area.

On Dec. 26, 1933, she married Julius Uitermarkt at the First Reformed Church parsonage in Sully. They began farming in the Fairmont vicinity near Monroe. They lived there five years, then moved to a farm south of Prairie City; their house burned down, though they farmed there for 33 years. In 1972 they retired and moved to Pella.

Tena was skilled at handwork and sewing, and often gave away doilies, quilts and afghans. She enjoyed playing cards, fishing and canning, including canned carp. While on the farm, Tena raised chickens and always kept a large garden. They enjoyed visiting with friends and family. On Sept. 24, 1994, Julius died. Tena continued to live in their home until July 2001, when she moved to Hilltop Manor in Pella. In October 2002, she moved to Pleasant Park Estates in Oskaloosa. She was a member of Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella.

She is survived by two children and spouses: Marvin L. and Bessie Smith Uitermarkt of Oskaloosa, and Doris J. and Jonathan Nibbelink of Pella; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; five step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; three brothers: Chris Septer of Searsboro, Gerrit (Shorty) Septer of Montezuma and Arnold Septer and wife Jean of Searsboro; a sister-in-law, Isabell Septer of New Sharon; and two brothers-in-law: Richard Heemsbergen and Marvin Dieleman, both of Grinnell; her husband's siblings: Albert and Maxine Uitermarkt of Oskaloosa, Harriet Uitermarkt Vanden Baard of Pella and Kathryn Uitermarkt of Leighton.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers: William and Richard Septer; and four sisters: Margaret Walker ,Christena Baltisberger, Reka Heemsbergen and Minnie Dieleman.
