PELLA - Brenda Huyser, 52, of Pella, died of cancer Saturday, March 9, at her home.

A celebration of her life will be 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church in Pella, the Rev. Mark Pries officiating, the Rev. Kim Wills assisting. Committal at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella will precede the memorial service. Memorials: Hospice of Pella for the planned Hospice Care Facility. The family will greet visitors 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella is in charge of arrangements.

Brenda Carol Strunk was born July 2, 1949, in Hazard, Ky., to Norman and Joyce Franks Strunk. She grew up in Hazard and graduated from Hazard High School in 1967.

In 1968 she married David Flinchum. They had two sons: David Stephen and Michael Ryan Flinchum. During this time Brenda worked for Julian Carroll and John Y. Brown, governors of Kentucky.

On Nov. 24, 1984, Brenda married James Edward Huyser of Pella, and she and her sons moved to Pella. Brenda was an administrative assistance to Iowa State Senators Deluhery and Dieleman. Most recently she worked in the Iowa State Department of Management. Fellow workers in the State Capitol donated a total of over a year's vacation for Brenda's paid leave so she could be with her family and recover from the effects of cancer treatment.

Brenda was a former member of Pella Garden Club, a charter member of the United Methodist Church in Pella, and an active member of United Methodist Women. She helped initiate the Pella Charity Ball, and she was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed family and friends, and was known for her parties, small get-togethers and holiday events.

She is survived by her husband, James; her sons, Stephen of Pella and Ryan of West Des Moines; Stephen's wife Joy (VanWyk) and their sons Braden Edward and Isaac Norman; her stepchildren, Derek Huyser and Meegan Huyser, both of Chicago, Ill.; her parents, Norman and Joyce Strunk of Hazard, Ky.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Patara Strunk of Hazard, Ky.
