Winfield Scott Brodess was born near Red Rock, Nov. 4, 1858. When he was a small boy his father went away to war, from which he never returned. At the age of 5 years he was bound out to a family by the name of Nutter. When he was large enough and old enough to keep his mother and himself he always took care of her. When a very young man he was married to Alice Redding. They lived at Red Rock, where she was stricken with tuberculosis and died after one year.
Then he and his mother moved to the place north of Eureka. He was united in marriage at the age of 27 to Mary Alice Durham, 48 years ago last March; 48 years ago he moved with his wife to the home he occupied until death again entered his home and took his wife on July 1, 1934. Since that time he has lived with his daughter, Inez. His mother and only sister, Clarisa Redding, and one brother, Aaron, passed away years ago.
Four weeks ago he tried to read his bible but was too weak to turn the pages. Several years ago he was in a very dangerous place from which he realized he could never have escaped only by God’s help.
Uncle Winnie has realized that same watchful care and help all these years. Life is not measured by the years it has spanned, but by the sacrifices it has made, the deeds it has done, the impression it has left upon the community at large. Measured by such a standard, W. S. Brodess has far exceeded the ordinary limit. Uncle Winnie lived a full, eventful life here, with all its joys and sorrows and trials, but since the death of Aunt Mary a few months ago he was very sad and lonely, and we are sure that he met with gladness his “Pilot, face to face.”
He leaves to mourn his passing one devoted daughter and son-in-law, Inez and Ernest Larew; three granddaughters and one grandson, Maxine and Kendall Bennett and Marjorie and Alice Larew; three nephews who were like sons to him, as he made a home for them when they were small, J. W. Lancaster, S. W. Lancaster and Charles E. Lancaster. He also leaves other relatives and a host of friends.
He passed away Sunday, Nov. 18, at 11:30 a.m. And thus is closed the book of the life of Uncle Winnie Brodess, a man whose deeds will live after him.
Funeral services were held at Harvey, Tuesday afternoon. Burial in Eureka cemetery.
