Dorothy Irene Griffin was born on Jan. 10, 1916, in Miami. She passed away on Sunday, July 3, at Griffin's Nursing Center in Knoxville.

She was one of ten children born to Bertha Sedella Sheriff and Ora Clyde Carter. On Aug. 14, 1937, she was united in marriage to Marvin Merle Griffin in Chariton. They made their home in Albia from 1948-1992. They worked together in Griffin's Mill and Lumber Company in Albia from 1948-1979. She was the company's bookkeeper.

They were not blessed with biological children, but did raise a niece and nephew from early age, Gloria and Fred Carter.

She was a member of the Albia Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was the church treasurer for several years.

She loved to garden and was an avid reader, particularly of spiritual and biographical works. The family considered Irene a gourmet cook.

Her parents; husband, Marvin; one sister and four brothers preceded her in death. Survivors include her children, Gloria Campbell of Priest River, Idaho, and Fred Carter, Jr. and his wife, Loralee of Lincoln, Neb.; three sisters, Hazel and her husband, Earl Griffin of Knoxville, Doris Morgan of Albia and Velta Martin of Moravia, one brother, Fred Carter, and his wife, Vernie, of St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren, Brent McLeland of Idaho, Rhonda Ebbert of Minnesota, Greg Carter of Maine, Sheri Koch of Idaho, Rochelle O'Donnell of Washington, Wendy Fox of California; seven great grandchildren, nine nieces and 11 nephews.

There was a funeral on July 6 in Knoxville with Pastor Greg Carter officiating.

Interment will be in Oakview Cemetery in Albia. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
