Funeral services for Bryce O. Macy, 83, of Sully were held July 8, 2002 at the Chapel of the Van Dyk - Duven Funeral Home in Pella, the Rev. Roger Punt officiating. Music was provided by organist Linda Schnell and soloist Warren Terpstra.

Interment was at the Sully Cemetery in Sully. Military honors by the Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion, Post #89 of Pella. Casket bearers were "Sons" - Curtis O. Macy, Mark B. Macy and William N. Macy, "Nephews" - Gerald Frank, Glenn Vanderpol, Kenneth Hackert and Melvin Lanser. Honorary bearers were "The Oakland Acres Floggers".

Bryce Ogden Macy was born on January 21, 1919 at Oskaloosa. He was the first of three children that were born to Carrol and Vivian Hull Macy. Bryce grew up in the Lynnville vicinity and graduated from the Sully High School in Sully. He then attended Grinnell College in Grinnell.

On June 18, 1941 he was united in marriage with Helen Marie Vanderpol, the youngest child of Simon and Helene Boot Vanderpol. Following their marriage, Bryce was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. Bryce assumed his service obligation with the 89th Infantry Division with significant pride and was honorably discharged in 1945. During his military career he received citations including: 1 service stripe, 2 overseas service bars, good conduct medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.

Bryce held in high regards the love, support, obedience and respect for the laws and constitution of the United States of America the remainder of his lifetime. Following his discharge, Bryce returned to Sully where he and Helen lived the remainder of their married life together, which was over 60 years.

Bryce was working for his father, Carrol Macy, at the Macy Stockyards which was established in 1914, at the time he was drafted and returned to this employment as a truck driver following his discharge. In 1954 he and his brother-in-law, Albert Renaud, formed a division of the business known as M & R Trucking. Bryce subsequently bought the entire business from his mother, Vivian Macy, and brother-in-law, Albert Renaud. Bryce remained active in the stockyards as a hog buyer until he retired at the age of 65 years.

Bryce then assumed his passion for golfing full-time. He and Helen enjoyed their retirement together in their home east of Sully until she became a resident at the Heritage Manor Care Center in Newton in May of 2001.

Helen passed away there on February 4, 2002 at the age of 83 years. Bryce continued living in their home following her death and passed away late Thursday evening, July 4, 2002 at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 13 days.

He is survived by his three sons: Curtis Ogden Macy and his wife, Linda of Cleveland, Tenn.; Mark B. Macy of Sun Prairie, Wis.; and William Noel Macy of St. Paul, Minn.; 2 granddaughters and one great-grandson. Of his original family, Bryce leaves his two younger sisters: Gweneth (Charles) Sorlien of St. Louis Park, Minn.; Eloise Pedersen and her husband, Karl of San Hose, Calif.; and a siste-in-law, Wilma (J. Arthur) Vanderpol, presently residing at Hilltop Manor North in Pella.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Carrol and Vivian Macy and his wife, Helen M. Macy.

Bryce was a charter member of the Sully Lions Club in Sully and the Jasper County Historical Society. He was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had served as a volunteer fireman in Sully; as a director for the Sully Telephone Association in Sully and the First State Bank in Lynnville; and chairman of the board for Iowa Realty Trust. Bryce attended the First Reformed Church in Sully where his wife, Helen, had directed several choirs for 40 years.

Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk - Duven Funeral Home in Pella.
