STEENHOEK, VAN ENGELENHOVEN, TOL

Funeral services for Carrie Steenhoek, 97, of Pella, who died Thursday, April 29, 2004 at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella, were held Saturday, May 1, at the Third Reformed Church in Pella. Rev. Kenneth A. Dykstra officiated at the services.

Carrie was born May 9, 1906 on a farm near Otley. She was the fifth of eleven children of Benjamin and Tryntje Tol Van Engelenhoven. She attended the Richland Country Grade School near Otley where she graduated from the 8th grade. She was baptized at the Otley Christian Reformed Church and as a young woman made profession of her faith at the Bethel Reformed Church near Otley.

On Aug. 19, 1929, she married Prescott William Steenhoek at the parsonage of the Third Reformed Church in Pella. To this union three children were born: Gertrude Viola, Betty Kathryn and Preston John. The couple lived in Pella all of their married lives. Pres was a partner in the Star Oil Company while Carrie was a dedicated homemaker. Pres retired in 1970 at which time they moved into the Pella Manor. Carrie was always a gracious hostess. She and Pres would always invite visiting ministers to stay with them. She was a wonderful cook and did a lot of sewing and crocheting.

In 1983 Pres died at the age of 76 years. Following his death Carrie continued living in the Pella Manor until 1993 when she moved to Hilltop Manor South in Pella. In 2002 she became a resident at the Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; five sisters, Jennie (Gerrit) Dykstra, Ethel (Gysbert) Menninga, Johanna (William) Den Adel, Bessie (Andrew) Kuiper and Elva Monster; three brothers, Rev. Everett (Clara) Van Engelenhoven, John B.(Alice) Van Engelenhoven and Arie, who died in infancy.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Preston J. and Mary Steenhoek of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters and their husbands, Gertrude V. and Clarence P. Van Zee of Pella, and Betty K. and Gerald Van Wyngarden of Holland, Mich.; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Cora Van Houweling formerly of Des Moines and Katie (Leroy) Vroom of Pella.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Pella Comfort House or the building fund of the Third Reformed Church in Pella.

Arrangements were made by Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home.
