Mary VanVeliet Peterson, 69, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2003 at her home.

She was born on September 24, 1934 in Otley, Iowa, the daughter of the late James and Ethel (Trumblee) VanVeliet. After graduating from Pella High School, Mary went on to receive a Bachelors Degree in Art in 1956 from the University of Iowa.

On February 23, 1957 she married Roger Franklyn Peterson in Pella Iowa at the 2nd Reformed Church. Together, they raised their family in Iowa. She was a member of the Junior League in Waterloo, Iowa. Along with being a homemaker Mary was very active volunteering in her community with Meals on Wheels, the Black Hawk County Humane Society, Door County Habitat for Humanity, and as a Conservator to parents in the Aid for Dependant Children Program.

Survivors include her husband, Roger of Sturgeon Bay; three sons, Bruce (Susan) and their son, Simon of Boston, Jeff (Jill) and their children, Brandon and Breanna of Detroit, Justin of Breckenridge, Colorado; sister, Lois Kopecky of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brother, James VanVliet of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Lila VanVark, and brother, Ralph VanVeliet.

A memorial service was held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2003 at Hope United Church of Christ with Rev. Vance Toivonen officiating.

Graveside committal services were be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella, Iowa at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2003 with Rev. Wallinga officiating.

Memorials may be made in her name for Black Hawk Humane Society, 166 W Airline Hwy, Waterloo, IA 50703.

Huehns Funeral Home of Sturgeon Bay has assisting the family with arrangements.
