Funeral services for Edward A. Patton, 84, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Pella were March 11 at Second reformed Church in Pella, the Rev. Steve Mathonnet-Vander Well, and Rev. Sophie Mathonnet-Vander Well officiated. Music was provided by organist Mrs. Carol De Young.
Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Casket bearers were James Patton, Benjamin Patton, Andrew Patton, Chad Monson, Stephen Patton, Ross Patton, Grant Patton, and John Nickelson.
Edward A. Patton was born on September 29, 1918 at Bristow to Roscoe and Ruth Corey. Ed graduated in 1935 form Mason City High School at Mason City and then enrolled at the Mason City Junior College where he attended for two years. Ed continued his college education at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he graduated in 1940 with a Degree in Engineering and Wood Technology.
On March 30, 1941 he was united in marriage with Margaret Emma Watts, a junior college acquaintance, in the Little Brown Church at Nashua. Ed and Margaret lived in Clinton until he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps. They lived in New York City and Alabama during his stateside service and eventually Margaret resided in Mason City during the 19 months Ed was stationed overseas.
Following his discharge in 1946 they returned to Clinton where their two sons were born: James Edward on August 14, 1946 and Stephen Ross on July 5, 1950. Ed was employed as an engineer at the Curtis Company (a woodworking manufacturer) at the time. In 1957 the family moved to Pella were Ed accepted a position with the Rolscreen Company. Ed was responsible for designing the folding door lock, which is still in use, and for 24 years was the quality control manager for the company. He retired at Pella in 1983 where they continued to live the remainder of their married life.
On November 7, 1995 Margaret passed away in Pella at the age of 79 years. Following her death, Ed moved to Cedar Rapids in 1996 where he made his residence in health care facilities the remainder of his life. He passed away in St. Luke's Hospital there on Friday morning, March 7.
Edward is survived by two sons and their wives; Dr. James E. and Janis N. (Gaass) Patton of Cedar Rapids, and Dr. Stephen R. and Sherri R. (Vander Wilt) Patton of Phoenix, Ariz., eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his parents, Roscoe and Ruth Patton and his sister, Jane Rasmussen. Military honors were provided by the Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post 89 of Pella.
Memorials may be designated for the Second Reformed Church of Pella.
Arrangements were handled by Van Dyke-Duven Funeral Home in Pella.
