Nunnikhoven, Antonie Aart

NUNNIKHOVEN, VAN HERWIJNE, SELLERS, SPENCE

Funeral services for Antonie Aart Nunnikhoven, 92, formerly of Pella, were held December 21 at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella, John Nunnikhoven and Paul Thomas officiated. Music was provided by Edward Short, pianist and Gonnie Noordermeer-Nunnikhoven, vocalist.

Interment was at the Oakwwod Cemetery in Pella. Casket bearers were Andrew Pealer, David Nunnikhoven, Ryan Nunnikhoven, Mark Thomas, Tony Nunnikhoven and Steve Beltramea.

Antonie Nunnikhoven was born to Johan Adriaan and Maria (Bastina van Herwijne) Nunnikhoven on September 16, 1910. He grew up in Pella and graduated from Pella High School in 1928. He then attended 4C's Business College in Des Moines. He moved to Burlington in 1929 and began work in an accounting firm. Soon after that, he took a job with the Burlington Basket Company. In the late 30's he took a job as comptroller of the Iowa Soap Company, which later became U.S. Borax. In 1964 he took the position of treasurer at Chittenden and Eastman Company. He was active in the Red Cross as chairman of the disaster relief program, a trustee of the Burlington Hospital and other civic groups.

He married Margaret Lois Spence from Madrid, Iowa in 1936. He dearly loved his family and to this union six children were born: John, Joe, Marcia, Tom, Nelda, and Steve. He enjoyed his accounting work and he and Margaret enjoyed traveling and gardening. They lived in Burlington for 63 years. After his retirement from various part-time jobs, they moved to Pella. They lived in their own home on Maple Street and later at Hilltop North. In 2000 they moved to Luther Park Care Center in Des Moines. He passed away December 16, 2002 in Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Spence) Nunnikhoven of Des Moines; his children and their spouses: John and Betty Nunnikhoven of Chester, Vermont; Joe and Pat Nunnikhoven of Dana Point, Calif.; Marcia and Paul Thomas of West Orange, N.J.; Tom and Kathy Nunnikhoven of Memphis, Tenn.; Nelda and Dave Pealer of Pella; Steve and Marika Nunnikhoven of Burlington; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother Maria, his younger brother Aart, his beloved step-mother Mama Van Lissel, his father, Johan and second step-mother, Minnie Mathes. Tony also lost his first wife, Martha Sellers shortly after they were married.

Arrangements were handled by Garden Chapel in Pella.
