Urban Carlton Lange, 73, of Pella, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2003 at Knoxville Area Community Hospital. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Sixteen Cemetery in What Cheer.

He was born on Sept. 4, 1930, in Burlington, the oldest son of Urban Eugene and Wilma Alice Walk Lange. "Nick" as he was known, attended the Burlington Public High School.

In July 1948 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was discharged in June 1961. He then lived in Washington, Iowa from 1964 to 1971 where he managed the Rose Motel for seven years. In 1971 he became a custodian at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

On Oct. 7, 1972 he married Menerva Jane Schakel Budding in Burlington.

The couple resided in What Cheer before moving to Pella in 1976. Nick then was employed at the Pella Corporation where he worked for over 16 years. During this time he and Menerva also lived at Prairie Village where they were managers for over three years. Menerva died in October 1992 and Nick continued to live in Pella until January of 2000 when he became a resident at the Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Menerva.

He is survived by four step-children and their spouses: Steven R. and Carol Budding of Indianapolis, Ind.; Sheila J. and Ronald E. Helm of Pella; Stuart D. and Marilyn Budding of Knoxville; Eric M. and Bonnie Budding of Pella; eight step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles F. Lange of Aledo, Ill.; a sister, Barbara A. Kirchgassner and husband Dale of Wever; along with three nephews and four nieces.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
