Funeral services for Virgil J. Boot, 80, of Pella were held February 1 at the First Reformed Church in Pella, the Rev. Paul Reynen officiated. Music was provided by organist Barb Nunnikhoven, soloist Patricia Van Waardhuizen and vocalists Marion and Alma Van Zee.
Interment was at the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella, the Rev. John McNabb officiated. Casket bearers were "grandchildren" - Lance Van Zee, Lynette Van Zee, Kyle Boot, Keith Boot, Vanessa Boot, Dustin Van Wyk, Derek Van Wyk and Devin Van Wyk.
Virgil J. Boot, the son of John W. and Pauline (Ver Ploeg) Boot, was born on October 8, 1922, south of Sully. Virgil was raised in the Pella area and graduated from Pella High School in 1940.
On March 28, 1945, Virgil was united in marriage with Esther Klein at the First Reformed Church Parsonage in Pella. They made their home on a farm five miles south of Sully for 45 years. Virgil and Esther moved to Pella in 1989.
Virgil served on the Jasper County Farm Bureau Board, the Sully Cooperative Board as President, and the First Reformed Consistory as a Deacon and an Elder. In 1987, Virgil started working for Ring-O-Matic and also delivered car wash pit cleaners until his health failed in 1998.
He enjoyed listening to Gospel music and playing cards with friends and family.
Virgil passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 21 days.
He is survived by his wife, Esther of Pella; their three children and their spouses: Lois and Bill Van Weelden of Oskaloosa; Verle and Corrine Boot of Pella; and Denise and Larry Allgood of Oskaloosa; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Boot who died in November 1970; his mother, Pauline Boot who died in September 1985; an infant sister, Alice Boot; and his son, Keith Eugene Boot who died in May 1966.
Arrangements were handled by Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella.
Memorials may be made to the Kidney Dialysis Unit - Pella Regional Health Center or First Reformed Church Organ Fund.
