Funeral services for Edward J. Van Gent, 71, of Waupun, Wis., who died on Thursday, November 23, 2000, at his daughter's home in Waupun, were held on Monday, November 27, 2000, at Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton. Rev. Andy Kamphuis and Rev. Dean Ulmer officiated at the services.

Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery in Leighton.

Edward was born on April 19, 1929, in Otley, the son of Peter and Dorothy (Verwers) Van Gent. He received his bachelor's degree from Central College in Pella in 1957.

Edward married Eleanor Hasselman on June 16, 1955, in Leighton.

He and Eleanor were missionaries to the American Indians through the Reformed Church in America in Macy, Neb. from 1956 to 1962 and from 1962 to 1968 in Winnebago, Neb. He also had lived for 18 years in Zeeland, Mich., and eight years in Mountain Home, Ark. where he was the owner and operator of a Magnetite Inside Storm Window dealership. He had also worked for Bethany Christian Services in Grand Rapids, Mich. from 1970 to 1984. He retired in 1992 and has lived the past four months in Waupun, Wis.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Waupun, Wis.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother and sister.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Van Gent of Waupun, Wis.; a son and daughter-in-law, Elliott and Diana Van Gent of Zeeland, Mich.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elissa and Nevin Webster of Waupun and Elona and Gregg Harrison of Grand Rapids, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Van Wyl of Lynnville and Janice Henning of Killduff; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Esther Van Gent of Pella; as well as nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Reformed Church Indian Mission in Macy and Winnebago, Neb.

Arrangements were made by Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella.
