Funeral services for Mary Louise Spriggs, 63, of Knoxville, who died Monday, May 22, 2000 at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held Thursday, May 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church. Pastors Reggie Ballard and Ron Bateman officiated at the services. Cindy Todd was pianist.

Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery. Casket bearers were Roger Todd, David Jordan, John Lovelady, Todd Vrban, Jerry Zimmer and Rick James. Honorary casket bearers were Krestin Spriggs, Dan Sutherland, David Sutherland, Timothy Spriggs, Doug Sutherland and Gordon O'Field.

Mary Lou was born on January 25, 1937 in Knoxville, the daughter of Corwin Clifton Sutherland and Vera Marie (Pitt) Sutherland.

She was raised in the Knoxville area, attending schools here until her senior year, which she spent at the Southwestern Bible Institute in Texas. After high school, she and a girlfriend helped start a new church in Colfax.

She married David Spriggs on May 20, 1958 at the First Assembly of God Church in Knoxville. The couple always made Knoxville their home. For two and a half years, the couple traveled with the Redeemed and the Rejoicing Gospel Group. Mary Lou was always very active in the church, and was a spiritual inspiration to many people. She will be remembered as a positive, energetic, loving and Christian wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, and previously was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, David; two sons, Krestin Spriggs of Knoxville and Timothy Spriggs of Pella; one brother, Richard Sutherland of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Joshua, Marc, Elisha, Jeremy and Nicholas; and one great-granddaughter, Zarra, born May 24, 2000.

Memorials may be made to the Knoxville Rescue Unit or the First Assembly of God Church.

Arrangements were made by the Bybee and Davis Funeral Home of Knoxville.
