Graveside services for Amos Orlando Spoon Sr, 70, of Collins, formerly Knoxville, who died on Friday, August 18, 2000, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, were held on Tuesday, August 22, at the Olive Chapel Cemetery in rural Marion County. Reverend Manzel Berlin officiated at the services.

Amos was born on February 3, 1930 in Osceola, the son of Ethel Marie Hill and Bertie Hobert Spoon. He was one of 12 children. The family lived on several farms in Murray, Woodburn, Thayer, LeRoy and Williamson while Amos was growing up. Amos completed the 8th grade and went to work to help support his family.
Amos served in the U.S. Army from November 6, 1947 to January 19, 1950. He was united in marriage to Donna Jean Richardson on August 3, 1954.

Amos worked at various jobs throughout his life. He was a carpenter, electrician, truck driver, heavy equipment operator, rendering plant superintendent and operated at taxi and laundry business. Amos was employed at Thousand Adventures R-V Sales and Service. He was also in charge of maintenance at the R & R Ranch in Osceola, Rathbun Retreat in Moravia, Crab Tree in Rhodes and Hickory Ridge in Knoxville. He was a cook at the Rathbun Retreat in Moravia.

Amos enjoyed music and singing and participated in jam sessions. He also sang in church. He served as minister at the Four Square Church for six years. He was a member of the Loring United Methodist Church.

Amos was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sisters; three brothers and infant son.

He is survived by five daughters, Betty Fulkner of Council Bluffs, Sharon Krouse of Des Moines, Dana Ewing of Des Moines, DeAnna Spoon of Chariton and Bobbie Lynn Spoon of Des Moines; two sons, Amos Spoon, Jr. of Melcher-Dallas and Walter Spoon of Des Moines; three sisters, Ethel Mitchell of Lucas, Myrtle Mitchell of Lucas and Sarah Harper Price of Silver City; three brothers, David Daniel Spoon of Osceola, Manuel Spoon of Whitehouse, Tenn. and George Spoon of Corydon; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the family or the Olive Chapel Cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Williams Funeral Home.
