Funeral services for Charles W. Sloan, Jr., 79, of Monroe, who died on Tuesday, August 15, 2000, at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held on Friday, August 18 at the Monroe United Methodist Church. Interment was at the Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

Charles was born on January 7, 1921 in Marshalltown, the son of Charles W. Sloan, Sr. and Mae Sandeen Sloan. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1941. He served eight years in the Navy including WWII - Serredan U.S.S. Midway. He married Florence Scott on September 19, 1942 in Lancaster, Mo. He had lived in Monroe since 1951.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one grandson.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Charles Dean Sloan of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Dennis John and Carla Sloan of Palmdale, Calif., and Duane Alan and Vanessa Sloan of Monroe; three daughters and one son-in-law, Doris Ann and Gary Altemeier of Kellogg, Deborah Kay Sloan of Newton, and Donna Sloan of Monroe; three brothers, Wain Sloan of Fairfield, Keith Sloan of Pella, and Marvin Sloan of Knoxville; one sister, Juanita Binns of Oskaloosa; and ten grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Monroe Emergency Unit.

Arrangements were made by the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe.
