Funeral services for Samuel Burris Goff, 96, of Knoxville, who died on Sunday, December 17, 2000, at Westridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, were held on Wednesday, December 20, at Evans-McCleery Funeral Home. Rev. Peter J. Peterson officiated at the services. Eulogy was by Forrest Whitlatch.

Interment was at Graceland Cemetery. Casket bearers were Steve Goff, Steve Coon, Greg Varner, Randy Allen, Jeff Dumond, Bill Fleming, and Frank Williams.

Burris was born on September 10, 1904, in Marion County, the son of Ernest and Causie Mae Smith Goff. He graduated from Dallas High School in 1923.

He married Myrtle Ellen Garrett on April 23, 1926 at her parent's home near Belinda. After a few years in the Melcher-Dallas area, they moved to Knoxville in 1931. Burris worked for the O.J. Roberts Auto Dealership and in 1945, he and J.V. Nash formed the Goff and Nash Auto Parts Store. Burris retired in 1965.

He was a 50 year member of the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville, a charter member of the Marion County Sportsman's Club and a former member of the Knoxville Rotary Club.

Burris was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant daughter; grandson, David Goff; great-grandson, Andrew Goff; step-grandson, Drew Dumond; a brother, Clinton; and a sister, Esther Whitlatch.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Mary of Des Moines and Tom and Jo of Knoxville; five grandchildren; one step-grandson; twelve great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church and Knoxville Heritage Foundation.

Arrangements were made by Evans-McCleery Funeral Home.
