Funeral services for Donald S. Grife, 65, of Newton, who died on Sunday, October 29, 2000, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton, were held on Thursday, November 2, at Pence Funeral Home in Newton. Rev. Max Johnson and Colleen Benway officiated at the services.

Interment was at Dallas Cemetery in Dallas.

Donald was born on November 19, 1934, in Mahaska County, to Cleo DeVern Grife and Alta Mae Braden. He lived in Melcher, Knoxville and Newton. He married Betty Beatrice Breese on February 13, 1954 in Melcher.

He was an Iowa Army National Guard lieutenant colonel, retiring in 1986. He worked at Maytag as director of product manufacturing for 43 years, retiring in 1996.

He enjoyed gardening, country music, traveling to Branson, Mo., wintering in Casa Grande, Ariz., camping, fishing, hunting, woodworking and fixing things.

He was a member of Maytag Management Club and Hitchhiker RV Club of Iowa.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wayne Grife.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Grife of Newton; a son and daughter-in-law, Daryl Eugene and Esther Grife of Newton; three daughters and a son-in-law, Shellene Dawn Leavens of Kellogg, Laura Jean and Bryce Moes of Newton and Barbara Ann Hackworth of Newton; seven grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Jim Clewell of St. Charles; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Carol Grife of Las Vegas, Nev.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or donor's choice in his name.

Arrangements were made by Pence Funeral Home.
