Funeral services for Harland Joseph Chandler, 91, of Knoxville, who died on Monday, September 18, 2000 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, were held on September 22, 2000 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Knoxville. Pastor Leon Hodges officiated at the services. Katie Davis was soloist. Cindy Todd was organist.

Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Military honors were accorded by Baty-Tucker Post 168, American Legion and John Myers Post, 3519 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Casket bearers were Craig Bosch, Ronald Bosch, Tim Bosch, Steve Wilkins, Dick Miller and Richard Hunt.

Harland was born on December 24, 1908 in Preston, Minn., the son of George and Winnie Joseph Chandler. He graduated from Preston High School in 1926.

He attended Normal Teacher Training and taught in a country school for one year. He also attended Winona State University and Dunwoody Institute of Technology in Minneapolis. He worked for the Minnesota Highway Department, then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and, after moving to Knoxville in 1942, he worked for the Marion County Soil Conservation Service. He was a member of the Army Corps of Engineers during WWII, serving in the South Pacific.

Harland married Helen Hindman in September of 1950 in Ida Grove.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Knoxville VFW and American Legion, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Marion County Sportsmen's Club. He enjoyed hunting and fly fishing.

Harland was preceded in death by his wife.

He is survived by one brother, George and his wife, Harriet of Spring Grove, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Edith Bosch of Monroe and Leila Wilkins of Ida Grove; many nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Arrangements were made by Evans-McCleery Funeral Home.
