Funeral services for Arie LeRoy Vander Heiden, 72, of Harvey, who died on Wednesday, October 24, 2001, at his home, were held on Monday, October 29, at Williams Funeral Home. Pastor Stephen Kowbel officiated at the services. Music was provided by Roberta Farrington, vocalist and John Bain, organist.

Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Casketbearers were John Dingeman, Todd Dursky, Jerry Kersey, John Lautenbach, Paul Patterson and Gary Vander Heiden, Jr. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post #165, VFW Post #3519 and Iowa National Guard Maintenance 364th Company.

Arie was born on September 16, 1929, in Harvey. He was the son of John Henry Vander Heiden and Daney Anna Keiran. He attended school at Eureka, one mile northwest of Harvey. In 1947 he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country at the beginning of the Korean War.

After returning home in 1951, Arie and his older brother, Henry, went to work for Maytag Company in Newton.

He married Edna Fay Stark on November 10, 1951, in Newton. To this union six children were born.

Arie was a member of many civic organizations. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Tracy for 22 years and was a member of the Za Ga Zig Shrine. He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Eagles in Knoxville.

He enjoyed gardening, bowling, computers, WWF wrestling, and giving and taking golf cart rides with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edna; four brothers, Henry, John, Harry and Frank; and two sisters, Ethel and Dica.

He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rosetta Vander Heiden of Harvey; Sondra and Rod Showers and Charlene and Don Barnes, all of Knoxville; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary Vander Heiden and Dennis Vander Heiden, both of Harvey, and Mike and Barb Vander Heiden of Albia; two brothers, Raymond Burkhart of Harvey and Manford Burkhart of Knoxville; four sisters, Mabel Holdsworth of Oskaloosa, Marian Gordon of Harvey, Mae Benscooter of Knoxville and Irene Vander Heiden of California; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made in his name to Hospice of Central Iowa or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements were made by Williams Funeral Home.
