Funeral services for May Lorena Vander Linden, 90, of Chariton, formerly of Knoxville, who died Thursday, December 20, 2001, at the Chariton Manor in Chariton, were held Saturday, December 22, at Williams Funeral Home. Pastor Gerald R. Feulmer officiated at the services. Music was provided by Barbara Westberg, organist and Janet Westberg, vocalist.

Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Casket bearers were David Block, Michael Kaut, David Poli, Steve Poli, Mark Savage and Michael Wilson. Honorary casket bearers were Maurice Johnston and Walter Kingery.

May was born on February 14, 1911, near Attica. She was the daughter of Mary Ann King and John Nicholas Priaulx. She was raised and lived most of her life in the Knoxville area. She graduated from Attica High School in 1929 and then attended Mahaska County Nursing School in Oskaloosa, from where she graduated in 1932.

She married Roy Edgar Vander Linden on November 14, 1934, in Unionville, Mo. To this union three children were born. May and Roy worked together on a dairy farm outside Knoxville.

She was a wonderful cook, especially bread. She embroidered pillowcases and baby quilts for her grandchildren. Her life centered on being a devoted mother and wife to her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; a grandson, Allen Pope; a sister, Dana Howell; and a half brother, Lloyd Priaulx.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Avice and Merle Pope and Myrna and Ray Poli, all of Chariton; a son, Melvin Vander Linden of Des Moines; a brother, Don Priaulx of Knoxville; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.

Arrangements were made by Williams Funeral Home.
