ONE BY ONE: Another Pioneer Gone
It becomes our painful duty this week to chronicle the death of one of our oldest settlers-William Welch, who died about 8 o'clock Tuesday evening of cancer. He had not been in the best of health for several years, and his death was not altogether unlooked for.
He was born at Huntsville, N.C., on January 1st, 100, being over 81 years old at the time of his death. In 1828 he was married to Elizabeth Judd, who survives him. In 1833 he removed from North Carolina to Illinois, which was then a wilderness.
He lived there until 1836 at which time he removed to Iowa, first stopping at Bonaparte and shortly after came to Marion county, where he has resided ever since. He leaves a wife and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.
He was the father of twelve children, nine of whom are yet living. The remains will be interred this afternoon at the Catholic cemetery, north of town.
