Nelson E. "Nellie" Bogaard was born to Henry and Mabel (Van Zante) Bogaard on July 8, 1938, in Mahaska County. He attended Else School, Black Oak #6, and Webster Elementary. He was a 1955 graduate of Pella Community High School and lived in the Pella area his entire life.

Nelson started dating Elinor Uitermarkt on commencement night in high school, and they were united in marriage on June 21, 1957, at the First Reformed Church in Pella. To this union, they were blessed with three children: Randy, Mike and Beth.

During high school, Nelson worked for farmers in the Pella area. Following high school, he worked for Roth & Associates doing carpentry and concrete work. In 1965, Nelson and Arnie Ryken started Pella Concrete Contractors, Inc. In 1968, he assumed full ownership and ran the business with his two sons. Nelson was a member of the Air National Guard for six years.

Nelson was a faithful member of Third Reformed Church in Pella, where he was an elder, a deacon, sang in the church choir, and enjoyed fellowship with the men of Vital Men Ministries. He had a heart for missions and went on numerous trips to Mexico, as well as Guatemala and Honduras. He was a man of few words, but was highly respected by all who knew him. Nelson and Elinor spent lots of time on their motorcycle and loved trips with friends, and enjoyed being in God's great outdoors. Nelson loved his grandchildren dearly and was proud to attend their many activities.

Nelson is also survived by his brother Paul (Mary) Bogaard of Sackville, NB, Canada; brothers and sisters-in-law: Verlan Uitermarkt of New Sharon, Kenneth (Fern) Uitermarkt of Pella, Maxine Lanser of Centennial, Colorado, Melvin (Shirley) Uitermarkt of Leighton, Linda (John) Grandia of Pella, David Norwood of Washington, North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.

Nelson is preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law Clayton and Dorothy Uitermarkt, and brother Ron (Edie) Bogaard, brother-in-law Gary Lanser, and sisters-in-law Nancy Norwood, and Marjean Uitermarkt.

Nelson will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
