Benoni Haskin Shinn, son of Amos and Mary Anne (VanDyke) Shinn, was born January 18, 1850, near Warren, Jo Daviess county, Illinois, and died at his home in Knoxville, April 11, 1934, aged 84 years, 2 months and 23 days.

During his eighteenth year, his parents moved to Iowa and settled on a farm in Marshall county. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Orpha Dunbar, at the Dunbar home near Attica, on Feb. 19, 1879. To this union four children were born, the first dying in infancy. The living are Mrs. Carr Sherwood, Hamilton, Iowa; Noel D. Shinn, Knoxville; and Mrs. Earl Bailey, Bussey.

One week after their wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Shinn moved to a farm in Douglas county, Nebr., where they spent 12 years. They then purchased a farm on the Indian reservation in Gage county, Nebr. In 1892, they sold the farm and moved to Adams county, Iowa. The next move was to a farm near Attica in the spring of 1903, and 14 years later they moved to Knoxville, where they have since resided.

For many years Mr. Shinn was active in the work of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. In the year 1898, he was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Corning, Iowa. The same year they moved to Knoxville, their membership was transferred to the Knoxville Methodist church. He never failed in his church obligations as long as his health permitted. He fought a good fight, kept the faith and is now entered into rest.

Those who await the glad reunion in God's eternal home are the wife and children, six grandchildren, two brothers, Will Shinn, of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Frank Shinn, of Seattle, Wash., one sister, Mrs. Mamie McClure of Colorado, also other relatives and many friends.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Knoxville, on Friday, April 13, at 2:00. The pastor, E.L. Stone, conducted the service, burial in Graceland.
