Arie De Reus

April 8, 1837 - January 21, 1923

Arie De Reus (Jr.) died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. B. (Mattie) Vriezelaar, at Otley, Sunday morning, January 21, 1923, aged 86 years, 9 months, and 13 days. Mr. De Reus had not been very well for several days, his ailments being those common to old age.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, at the home at one o'clock, and at the Otley Baptist church at 1:30 o'clock. Interment was at the First Reformed cemetery, north of Pella.

Mr. De Reus was a resident of Pella until a few years go, when approaching old age made it necessary for him to go to the home of his daughter. He has lived in this vicinity since coming to America as a child in 1847.

He is survived by seven sons (Arie, Peter, Henry, John, William, Nelis, Gradus) and three daughters (Maggeltje, Nellie, Mary), many grandchildren, and more than twenty great grand children. Something over a hundred descendants mourn his departure. His wife, who was Grietje Bruggeman, died in 1882. Three children died in infancy.

He was the eldest of four brothers and the first of the four to to. The others, Peter, Marinus, and Ned, are residents of Pella, their ages being respectively 83, 80, and 78 years. His father lived to be 83 years old and his mother 81. The average age of the four brothers, at the time of Mr. De Reus' death was almost eighty two years, a remarkable record in longevity.
