Phillip was born in Melcher June 21, 1930 to James Henry and Martha Alice Vander Ecken.

He was married to Alta Oxenreider on October 9, 1959 at the Lutheran Church in Melcher. They were blessed with 3 children: Donald, Lesley, and Jerry.

He attended school in Melcher and worked as a concrete worker and a school bus driver. He loved being with his family and having cookouts with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, visiting with neighbors, and tinkering in his garage. And he always enjoyed sitting in his living room looking out at the windmill and passers by.

Phillip passed away August 29, 2008 in Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife Alta; children: Donald (Carrie) Vander Ecken, Lesley (John) Anderson, and Jerry Vander Ecken; 8 grandchildren: Michael, Mitchell, Trayton, Seth, Jacob, Kristen, Anna, and Molly; siblings: Junior Vander Ecken, Johnny Vander Ecken, Elizabeth Burt, Eleanor May Clark, Margaret Morrow, and Karen Flick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Kenneth Robinson, Charlton Vander Ecken, George Vander Ecken, Marie Mattingly, and Mary Alice Jones.
