James was born to James and Alice (Robinson) VanderEcken on November 6, 1928 in Melcher-Dallas.
He married Mary J. Exline on August 10, 1957 in Stanhope, Iowa.
He was a member of the United States Army, and served during the Korean Conflict.
James worked at various factories: Lenox, Maytag, Fawn Engineering; and he also worked construction. He belonged to the American Legion for over fifty years. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing. After 1998 he enjoyed spending his winters in Mesa, Arizona.
James passed away July 2, 2009 at his residence.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: Kenneth Robinson, Phillip VanderEcken, Charlton VanderEcken, George VanderEcken, Julia Marie Mattingly, and Mary Alice Jones.
He is survived by his wife Mary of Melcher-Dallas; son, Danny Lee (Jenny) Cobb of Chariton; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren, a great grandchild; siblings: Elizabeth Burt of Melcher-Dallas, John VanderEcken of Melcher-Dallas, Elinor Clark of Arizona, Karen Flick of Oskaloosa, and Margaret Morrow of Chariton; and a host of nieces and nephews.
