Family services were held for Darlene Swarthout, 85, on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007. Interment will be at a later date at the Chariton Cemetery. Memorials to the Circle of Friends Home Health Care in Chariton.

Darlene was born June 25, 1922, in Chariton to Edward and Emma May Luke. She graduated from Melcher High School in 1938. Darlene married Jean W. Swarthout in 1939 and they were blessed with five children. She worked at the Hy-Vee Bakery in Chariton and also baby sat for many families in addition to her own.

She loved living in the country, picking black raspberries, gooseberries, hunting mushrooms, and growing a garden and flowers. Her family was very important to her and always enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her five sisters.

Darlene passed away of heart failure on Nov. 21, 2007 at the Knoxville Hospital. Darlene is survived by her children: Jim (Sandy) Swarthout of Chariton, Cheryl (Ken) Kline of Chariton, Denny (Becky) Swarthout of Salem, Doug (Collette) Swarthout of Chariton, and Cyndi (Bob) Wilkinson of Chariton; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters: Jesse Scott of Knoxville, Betty (Darvin) Dare of Des Moines, Lavera Swarthout of Knoxville, and Marilyn Swanson of Knoxville. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Jean W. Swarthout in 1984, an infant brother Edward, and a sister Lucille Seddon.
