Flavia Ethel Van Zee was born April 10, 1918 in Pleasantville, Iowa the daughter of Myrl and Jessie (Lyon) Stubbs.

She was raised in Pleasantville and graduated with the Class of 1936. On Oct. 3, 1936, she was united in marriage to Charles Van Zee in Unionville, Mo. The couple always made their home in Pleasantville with the exception of six years, when they resided in Dallas County.

Ethel was a steadfast farm wife; she was a good cook and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. She kept excellent genealogy records of the entire family and served as a resource for all the family history. Ethel enjoyed planning her class reunions and attending the alumni banquets. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Ethel passed away at the Comfort House, in Pella, on Wednesday, Dece. 5, 2007, at the age of 89.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Claren Van Zee.

Those left to honor her memory include her loving husband of 71 years, Charles; her daughter, Glenadean Van Zee Betterton of Pleasantville; son, Bruno Jessen (Renate) of Hamburg, Germany; grandchildren: Tamra Starr-DePaul (Tony) of Elmhurst, Ill.; Tonya Betterton of Breckenridge, Colo.; James Van Zee (Barbara) of Des Moines; Miika Busick (Rob) of Pleasantville and William Betterton (fiancé Andrea Drew) of Pleasantville; nine great-grandchildren: Hunter, Spencer and Zach Starr; Jessie DePaul; Trey, Brock, and Paige Busick and James Carl and Brayton Van Zee a sister, Dixie Minnick of Norwalk and her brother, Glenn Ardean Stubbs (Marian) of Norwalk and many other family members and friends.

A Funeral Service was held at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, with Pastor John Claussen officiating.
