Heaberlin, LaVaughn (Long) 1922-2007

LaVaughn (Long) Heaberlin, daughter of J.E. (Roy) Long and Nellie (Van Scoyk) Long was born on a farm north of Sandyville on June 15, 1922, and passed away at her home in Indianola on Sept. 19 at the age of 85.

LaVaughn attended elementary school at Sandyville and attended high school and graduated from Beech High School in 1939. On Dec. 23, 1939, LaVaughn married Jim Heaberlin. To this union two sons were born, Larry E. and Steven D. Heaberlin. In 1941, LaVaughn and her husband Jim began farming independently. LaVaughn and Jim with their two sons established the first farm family corporation in Marion County in 1973.

LaVaughn was active in many community activities and served on numerous committees, which included the Pleasantville P.T.A. and Band Boosters. She was a 50-year member of Eastern Star, Pleasantville Chapter.

LaVaughn was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and served for 40 years as the wedding coordinator. She and Jim were avid fans and attended many activities at the Pleasantville School. They received recognition as the 1993 "Fans of the Year" and served as grand marshals for Pleasantville homecoming in 1998.

LaVaughn had many interests including traveling and collecting antiques. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and decorating cakes. LaVaughn especially enjoyed tending her flower gardens and spoiling the neighborhood children.

Left to mourn her passing are sons Larry (Karen) of Pleasantville and Steven (Joann) of Indianola. She is survived by six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

She is survived by one sister Virginia Kirkpatrick of Pleasantville and one sister-in-law Virginia Miller of Sacramento, Calif., and foster brother-in-law Marion Hearron (Nedra) of Leon. Her parents, her husband, one brother and three sisters and two great-grandsons preceded her in death. She is remembered as well by a host of family and friends.
