Mary Ethel Spaur was born on May 29, 1920, in Marion County. She was one of four children born to Edna Gass and John Key. Mary graduated from Attica High School in 1939.

On May 13, 1939, Mary Ethel Key married Francis Leo "Jr." Spaur in Milan, Mo. To this union one son, Jack, was born.

She was a member of the Attica Methodist Church. Mary was a long time trustee of the Indiana Chapel Cemetery Association. She and Jr. spent many hours on their C.B. radios, with Mary being known as the "camper kid." She spent many summer weekends camping at the Knoxville Raceway cheering for her favorite driver, Doug Wolfgang. She also took many summer vacations with her granddaughters in their Winnebago. Mary was an avid Hawkeye fan too!

In Mary's words, "Her greatest joy was spending time with my son, family, granddaughters, their husbands and great-grandchildren." She greatly enjoyed having the great-grandkids at her home so she could spoil, love, hug and feed them. Grandma Mary never came to a family gathering without bringing her homemade macaroni and cheese, bread and noodles.

Mary passed away on Aug. 5, 2007, at the age of 87.

Preceding Mary in death were her parents; husband; one sister, Wilma and two brothers, Ray and Ovid Key.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Jack and Teresa Spaur of Knoxville; two granddaughters and their husbands; six great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Mrs. Spaur was held at Williams Funeral Home on Aug. 7. A private family committal was held at Indiana Chapel Cemetery in rural Marion County. Memorials in memory of Mrs. Spaur may be made to Indiana Chapel Cemetery Association.
