Bessie Letitia King was born on Oct. 14, 1908, in Shelby County, Ill., to Leonard and Dora (Agan) Jones.
Bessie was raised in the Columbia area and graduated from Attica High School. She was married to William Clark King on March 26, 1927, in Osceola. The couple first made their home in the Bussey area, and later moved to their farm near Attica. After Bessie and Clark retired from the farm they moved into Attica. Bessie became the Postmaster for Attica in 1966 and served the community for 12 years. She also prepared hot lunches at the Attica School for a few years.
Bessie loved to cook, everyone's favorite being her homemade pies. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting and working on crossword puzzles or playing dominos. She was a member of the Attica United Methodist Church.
Bessie passed away on Feb. 15, 2007, at the West Ridge Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 98.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clark; three brothers, Floyd, Arthur and one in infancy; son, Howard and a grandson, Alan King.
Survivors include her daughter, Halene King of Attica; her son, Harold King of Des Moines; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
Funeral services were held at Bybee & Davis on Feb. 19 with Rev. Bud Lane & Rev. Steve Bagby officiating. Interment was in Gullion Cemetery in Attica.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or to the Indiana Township First Responders.
