Funeral services for Hazel M. O'Connor, 84, who died on Oct. 13 in Leon, were held Monday at Saint Brendan's Catholic Church in Leon with Father William Miller, C.PP.S, officiating. Burial was at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.
O'Connor was born on a farm in Tracy on Dec. 28, 1919. She was the daughter of Stephen and Nellie Sherman. She graduated from Tracy High School in 1937.
As a young woman, Hazel moved to Des Moines, where she spent most of her life. She worked during World War II in an ordnance plant north of Des Moines, and later worked for Equitable Insurance and Look Magazine. The majority of her working career was spent as a data processor for Budget Marketing Incorporated, a magazine clearinghouse. She retired in 1990 at age 70.
She married Joseph O'Connor of Danbury in 1947. She was widowed in 1986. The couple had five children: Barry O'Connor of Dexter, Mich., and his wife, Karen; Kathryn Mart of Lamoni, Iowa and her husband Doug; Richard O'Connor of Salt Lake City, Utah and his wife. Patti; Timothy 0'Connor of Heber City, Utah, and his wife, Nancy and David O'Connor of Des Moines and his wife, Mary.
O'Connor was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband, her brother, Cecil Sherman, and sisters Cleo Gardener and Isabelle Cummings.
She is survived by her five children, 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Beulah Sherman of Tracy.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon was in charge of arrangements.
