B. Maude Hillyer was born on December 23, 1909, on a farm near Keota, Iowa. She was one of eight children in the family. Her parents were Mary Grace Randolph and John Wade.
Maude grew up in the Keota area and graduated from Keota High School in 1927. She attended Murphy School of Shorthand in Oskaloosa. Upon completion, Maude began working at the VA Medical Center in Knoxville. She eventually became the Executive Secretary to the hospital director. Maude retired in April 1978, after 37 years of employment.
Maude was united in marriage to Clyde Herman Six on May 9, 1931. He passed away on February 15, 1936. After several years, Maude married Clifford Raymond Hillyer on December 2, 1944. Maude and Cliff had many happy years together until his death on December 26, 1974.
Maude had a variety of interests. During her younger years she liked to play golf. Maude always enjoyed playing bridge and had several books regarding the rules.
She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville. Maude was a 60 year member of the Grand Iowa Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and Kappa Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. She was also active in the Knoxville Area Community Hospital Auxiliary, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Friends of the Library.
Maude Hillyer passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital at the age of 97 years and 23 days.
Those family members who preceded her in death were her parents; two husbands, one sister and five brothers.
Maude’s survivors include one brother and his wife, Clarence R. and Sue Wade of Geneseo, IL; three sisters-in-law, Naomi Wade of Marion, Iowa, Evelyn Wade of Washington, Iowa and Nola Wade of Ventura, California; several nieces and nephews and four very dear friends, Peg and Dan Adkisson, Marge Hanifan and Pearl Legler of Knoxville.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville with Rev. Dr. David Henion and Rev. Art Hill officiating... A luncheon will follow the service. Interment will be on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at 9:30 a.m. in Graceland Cemetery.
Musical selections will be “How Great Thou Art”, “In the Garden” and “In the Sweet Bye and Bye.” Honorary casket bearers are Rev. Dr., David Henion, Jessica Henion, Jordan Henion, Joshua Henion, Sandy Henion Corrine Kimberlin, Tanner Kimberlin, Tyler Kimberlin, Aubrey Martinez, Dan Martinez, Daniell Martinez, Juanita Martinez and Randall L. Wade. Friends may call at Williams Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2007 when the family will be present.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers.
