Sanders, Leonard Clair 1924-2006

Leonard Clair Sanders was born on Sept. 22, 1924, in Poweshiek County to Alfred "Cage" and Clara (Surber) Sanders.

Leonard grew up in Oskaloosa. He married Ruth Blythe on April 10, 1949, in Knoxville. He was employed by Weldon Strip Mining and the Red Rock Dam. In later years he worked for Hy-Vee and did odd jobs. Ruth passed away on July 5, 1984. Leonard would later meet Alberta Sutton and on Nov. 18, 1995, they were married in Knoxville.

Leonard loved playing his banjo and going to music jams. He was also a member of the National Guard in Knoxville.

Leonard passed away on Oct. 21, 2006, at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital at the age of 82.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; a sister, Aletha Carnahan and three brothers, Millard Sanders, Wayne Sanders and Marvin Sanders.

Survivors include his wife, Alberta; daughters, Rita Storm of Conway, S.C. and Leona Martin of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters, Veda Zimmerman of New Sharon, Odra Fisher of Carroll and Kathy Dunwoody of Polk City; brothers, Lavern Sanders of Williamson, Kenneth and Vince Sanders, both of Ankeny and Carmen Sanders of Blue Springs, Mo; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 24 at Bybee and Davis Funeral Home with Pastor Kirk Erwin officiating.

Interment was in Lincoln Cemetry in Marion County. Memorials may be sent to the family.
