De Wild, Pauline (Wielard) 1912-2006

Pauline Wielard was born west of Pella, Iowa on April 15, 1912, a significant date in U. S. History the day the Titanic sank. She was the youngest of four children that were born to the late Kryn and Tryntje (Kate) Vander Wiel Wielard.

When Pauline was five years of age her mother, Kate, passed away. Pauline attended the Webster Grade School in Pella for all grades except the sixth when she went Lincoln Grade School.

On November 19, 1931, she was united in marriage with Louis De Wild at Knoxville, Iowa and to this union one son, Howard Wayne, was born on July 16, 1941. Following their marriage Pauline and Louis lived on a farm south of Pella on the Washboard road. In December of 1955 they accepted a part-time job with the Fowler Telephone Company in Pella, which later became known as the Hawkeye State Telephone Company.

On January 24, 1972, Louis passed away unexpectedly at the age of 71 years. In April of that year Pauline moved into Pella where she made her home at 1001 Washington Street.

After becoming a widow, Pauline continued working for the telephone company and also worked part-time for Cook & Son Insurance Agency. She held these two jobs until her retirement in May of 1977. Pauline remained very active physically during her retirement and you would most often find her gardening during the spring and summer months. She was able to continue living in her home even at her advanced age. On September 21, 2006, Pauline fell in her home and broke her hip. She underwent surgery successfully and subsequently was admitted into the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.

On Friday afternoon, November 3, 2006, she passed away peacefully in the presence of her son, Howard, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House. She attained the age of 94 years, 6 months and 18 days.

Surviving is her son, Howard De Wild, a retired History teacher, and his wife, Linda of Allison, Iowa; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Dr. Louis John De Wild, an Anesthesiologist, and his wife, Rebekah and their son, Henry Louis De Wild of Des Moines, Iowa; Juliana Irene De Wild, a Registered Nurse of Coralville, Iowa; Malina Jen, a Registered Nurse, and her husband, Jeremy Withrow and their two sons, Austin Chase and Christian Charles Withrow also of Coralville. Pauline was the last surviving member of her original family and leaves only nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; her parents: her mother, Kate Wielard in 1917 and her father, Kryn Wielard in 1965; her step-mother, Henrietta (Bosveld) Wielard in 1966; and all of her siblings. Her brother, Frank Wielard who passed away in 1977, her brother, Gerrit H. Wielard in 1984 and her sister, Jennie Van Der Hart in 1993. Pauline was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, Hendrik De Wild in 1913; her mother-in-law, Gerritje Vander Streek De Wild in 1944; and all of her deceased husband, Louis', siblings: Minnie, Mrs. John C. De Bruin, Trynie, Mrs. Andrew Van Zee, Henrietta, Mrs. John C. De Bruin, Johanna, Mrs. Peter Hackert, Jennie, Mrs. Gradus Dykstra, Albert H. De Wild and John De Wild.

Pauline was a longtime member of the Third Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa.
