Ryken, Petronella Kelderman Langstraat 1906-1995

Petronella (Nellie) Kelderman Langstraat Ryken of Pella died Tuesday, February 14, 1995 at the Pella Community Hospital, at the age eighty-eight years, four months and thirteen days.

She was born near Taintor, Iowa in Mahaska County, on October 2, 1906, to Teunis and Wilempe (Emma) Ryke Kelderman. She was baptized November 11, 1906, in the Peoria Christian Reformed Church. Nellie received her education in the rural schools of Mahaska County.

On August 1, 1925, she married Henry John Langstraat of Pella. Early in their marriage they lived for about four years in Sheldon, Iowa. On March 18, 1929 she professed her faith in God in the First Reformed Church in Sheldon, Iowa. In 1930, they moved to the Oskaloosa area where they farmed the rest of their time together. To this union, five children were born: Agnes Wilma (Mrs. Ray) Van Weelden of Oskaloosa; Emily June (Mrs. Bill) Dieleman of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Leona Mae (Mrs. Harold) De Vries of Lynnville; Henry Jr. (and Cynthia) of Otley; Terrell Lee "Terry" (and Coral) Langstraat of Roundup, Montana. Nellie's husband, Henry Langstraat, died May 2, 1972.

On October 10, 1973, she married Gysbert Ryken of Oskaloosa, Iowa. He died January 14, 1976.

Nellie was formerly a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa and was member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella at the time of her death. Until her health failed, she was a member of the Willing Workers. Nellie was an avid artist and enjoyed Christian music.

She is survived by her five children; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-nine great-grandchildren; one brother: Gerrit Kelderman of Oskaloosa; three step-children: Sybern Ryken of Oskaloosa, Cobie and Melvin Kelderman of Oskaloosa, and Arnold and Wilma Ryken of Pella.

She is preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one grandchild: Valerie Ann Langstraat; four brothers: Peter, John, Guy and Tunis Kelderman; also two step-sons: Garritt and Elmer Ryken.
