McCombs, Gertrude "Gertie" Margaret (Marshall)

Gertrude "Gertie" Margaret McCombs was born on May 14, 1916, at home in Black Hawk County. She was one of 10 children born to Annastacia Flaherty and James Marshall.

On June 6, 1936, Gertie married Raymond H. McCombs. To this union three sons and one daughter were born. After Raymond's death, Gertie married Paul McCombs. To this union two daughters were born. Gertie lived a major portion of her adult life in the Tracy area.

Gertie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville; Bellefontaine Cemetery Auxiliary; Tracy Senior Citizens and the Tracy Festival Committee.

Gertie spent many hours quilting for family and friends. She also liked to read Louis L' Amour books. Gertie was an excellent cook. There were always homemade noodles and sugar cookies whenever the family stopped to visit. Gertie was proud of her family and enjoyed being with them. In later years Gertie discovered that she liked to travel. She frequently visited her Arizona family. On these trips Gertie had a wide variety of adventures: riding a helicopter, hot air balloon and glass bottomed boat.

Gertrude Margaret McCombs passed away on Aug. 9, 2006, at Westridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 90.

Those family members who preceded her in death were her parents; two husbands; one son, Art McCombs; four sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include three daughters, Fay Boyd of Tracy and her husband, Dean, Kathy Heberer of Phoenix, Ariz. and her husband, Wayne and Helen Marshall of Knoxville; two sons and their wives, Dave and Jane McCombs of Bussey and Guy and Georgia McCombs of Sun City West, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; one brother and his wife, Larry and Bert Marshall of La Porte City and two sisters, Betty Kalvig of Waterloo and Agnes Anderson of La Porte City.

A private family committal will be held at Bellefontaine Cemetery in rural Marion County at a later date.
