Laird, Joy 'Dale' 1936-2006

Joy 'Dale' Laird was born on March 28, 1936, in Marion County. He attended school in Attica and was the youngest son of Ralph and Emma (Lundy) Laird.

In 1956 he married Betty Faye Wright. They later divorced. On Jan. 26, 1970, he married Patricia Lundquist. They shared 36 years of marriage in the Iowa communities of Redfield, Stuart, Toledo and Chariton. Dale worked as a farmer, truck driver, meat packer and was a self-employed siding contractor.

He enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing and camping anywhere, especially in Colorado. He loved his family most of all.

Dale died on Feb. 20, 2006, after a courageous, six year battle with cancer, in his home in Chariton at the age of 69.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Mark; brothers, Lawrence, Mart and Gene and one infant sister, Dorothy.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons, Rick (Robyn) of Van Meter, Kevin (Tracy) of Olathe, Kan., Brian (Tammy) of Waukee and Nathan (Jessica) of Stuart; six grandchildren; two great-grandsons; brothers, Amos of Knoxville and Ralph, Jr. of Chariton; sisters, Peggy Small of Des Moines and Velma Brock of Knoxville; father and mother-in-law, Ray and Doris Lundquist and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 24 at Evans-McCleery Funeral Home with Pastor Charles McMillian officiating.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Knoxville Free Methodist Church.
