Helen Dawn Koons was born on Nov. 25, 1911, in Pleasantville to Clifford A. Karns and Birdie M. (Horsman) Karns.

She was raised in Pleasantville and graduated with the class of 1931. On Dec. 3, 1940, she married Argyle Donald "Don" Koons. The couple made their home and farmed in the Pleasantville area. Helen was active in the Christian church and the Pleasantville Senior Center. She enjoyed cooking and was an excellent seamstress. Her greatest joy was being a dedicated farm wife, mother and sister. She was always available to help a family member or friend in need.

Helen died on April 13, 2006, at the Pleasant Care Living Center at the age of 94.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; an infant daughter, Sue Ann; brother, Jess Karns; sister, Ruth Karns Dixon and her brother-in-law, Herb Clark.

Survivors include her foster son, Laverne Ackerman of Ames; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Dwight (Peg) Karns of Pleasantville; sisters, Mary Clark of Pleasantville and Dorothy (Phil) Proffitt of Knoxville and a brother-in-law, Don Dixon of Indianola.

Funeral services were held on April 17 at Mason Funeral Home with Pastor John Claussen officiating. Interment was in Pleasantville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.
