Mary. A. (Mae) Bubon Konrad, 90, died on May 5, 2006, at Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

In the spring of 1916, a baby girl was born to John and Mary Maras Bubon in the small coal- mining town of Rathbun. The baby girl was given the name Mary, after her mother and the Blessed Virgin. In a family that would eventually number 13 children, Mary was their eighth child and their second daughter.

In 1926 with coal-mining operations slowing in Rathbun, John moved his wife and nine children to Dallas where he found employment at the Consolidated Indiana Mine Number 2, located west of Melcher. It was in this area that Mae remained for the rest of her life.

On April 17, 1937, Mae married James Konrad of rural Dallas and to this marriage were six children: Emily (Dan) Davis, Jim (Judy) Konrad, Bill (Paula) Konrad, Rick (Dixie) Konrad, Kathy (Craig) Clark and Kevin.

Mae was a faithful Christian woman and lived her life accordingly. As a daughter, she and her sister provided for the end-of-life care for their aging parents. As a sibling, her home was always open to her brothers and sisters and their families. As a wife, she again provided end-of-life care, this time for her husband. As a mother, she was always there, from morning breakfast to afternoon supper. As a friend and neighbor, she was wonderful.

Throughout her life Mae was an-active member of her extended family at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She served on the parish council, Altar and Rosary, Mission Guild and the committee that provided meals at funerals.

Mae was always content with her place in life, never wanting for anything better than what she already had. She was happiest when she was able to work in her vegetable and flower gardens, cook meals for her family and visit with family and friends.

When the Heavenly Father blesses you with the very best, it is always difficult to let go.

However, the time has come to let Mae receive the reward that she worked so hard for all of her life. Thank you for the memories, they will never die.

Mary is survived by her six children; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandson; two sisters, Anne Pezzetti of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Elizabeth (Charles) Wasker of West Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; seven brothers; two sisters and one granddaughter.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on May 8 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Melcher with burial following at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Memorials are requested to the Hospice Kavanagh House or the Melcher-Dallas Rescue Unit.
